Michael Porter, graduated this past March, 2018, with a Master of Business Administration (MBA). More on his journey to graduation:
“My educational journey began in 2015 when I made a personal decision to advance my education after thinking about doing so for several years prior to that. I had been already working in my career for a few years and had realized that all of the people in the positions that I was aspiring to be had their MBA.
At first, I was very skeptical about online learning and wasn’t sure if I was going to be able to motivate myself enough to continue the process, but I set a goal for myself to complete my degree no matter what. I also had support from my wife to better myself, which helped push me through as well. I remember attending the first open house at the school and speaking with individuals from the online program as well as the business school. I also remember winning a t-shirt for attending some online training that I still have to this day. It was then when I made the decision to choose Webster University as my school of choice for my MBA.
Everything was moving smoothly, and my classes were proving to be much more convenient than I had thought they would be. Considering I was working in my full-time career, the amount of work and the ability for online access was actually extremely flexible. My job also requires a fairly extensive amount of travel and having the ability to take my classes with me anywhere I went allowed for a huge amount of freedom to learn and keep on track throughout. As long as wherever I traveled had internet access, I was able to access my classrooms.
In May of 2016, my first child was born, and my life changed completely. I had to take a semester off from school and it took a lot of drive to push myself back into finishing my degree after that, but I had set a goal and I was determined to reach it. Three months after my son’s first birthday, my work moved my family to another state. I was able to take all my classes with me and I remember completing discussion posts while living out of boxes for a few days.
I remember just a few weeks ago when I turned to my wife and said, “wow, I only have two weeks left of school, I feel like I just started yesterday”. I have to say that I know that I learned a lot of information that is going to drastically help me in further advancement of my career and throughout the course of my life. I am glad to say that I set my goal and accomplished it for not only myself, but for my family as well.
From hotel rooms to new homes, I was able to achieve my advanced degree. Thanks to Webster University and their Online Learning programs, I was able to advance my career and begin a family all while going to school at the same time.”
